Expert Insights
Unlocking the Channels and Tools of
Cross-Cultural Communication
Andrea, an Italian content creator known for promoting Chinese cities and tourism, shared his perspective on cross-cultural storytelling. He said, “It’s not just about translating language—it’s about connecting with people across cultures. Don’t just describe a city; be a cultural translator. Tell Shenzhen’s story in a way people around the world can relate to.”
Senior media professional and short video mentor Xie Jianqi shared practical tips on video production, walking participants through the full process—from choosing a topic and writing a script to filming and editing—using real cases and award-winning works.
He said, “The camera is the creator’s eye, and the script is the soul of a video. You don’t need expensive equipment—your smartphone is enough. In the age of short videos, authenticity matters more than perfection.”
Youth Voices:
From Classroom to Practice,
Capturing Shenzhen Through the Lens
Young participants from diverse cultural backgrounds shared their reflections and creative enthusiasm after listening to the experts, expressing their own understanding of how to tell Shenzhen’s stories through the lens of international communication.
Jesslyn Anabelle, an international student from Indonesia—an APEC member economy—filled her notebook with reflections during the workshop. She said the sessions reshaped her understanding of video creation, highlighting the importance of an international perspective and communication boundaries. With Shenzhen set to host APEC 2026, she sees a valuable opportunity to showcase the city to audiences back home. “Shenzhen is not only fast-paced, but also full of warmth,” she noted, adding that she hopes to serve as a “cultural translator” through her work.
Content creator Zhang Youzhi, already familiar with Shenzhen, praised the practical training. She said the editing techniques and bilingual subtitle guidelines addressed key technical challenges, especially in formatting. These new skills will help her better capture and present the city’s dynamic entrepreneurial scene.
PANAH Humaira, an international student from Pakistan, highlighted Shenzhen’s ecological appeal. She noted that beyond its reputation for technology and skyscrapers, the city offers extensive parks and green spaces. Inspired by the workshop, she plans to film locations such as mangroves and Talent Park, aiming to present Shenzhen’s more natural and harmonious side to a global audience.
Continuing Youth, Meeting at APEC
The conclusion of this workshop marks the beginning of a new journey.
Registration for the 5th “Just Shenzhen Just Young” Video Contest is now open.
Whether young creators want to capture the city’s miracles, showcase youthful energy, or document its ecological beauty and innovative spirit, this is a stage to unleash talent and engage the world.
Once you come, you are a Shenzhener; once you film, you become a city storyteller! We look forward to more youth capturing Shenzhen, meeting at APEC, and using the power of short videos to promote this vibrant city in the world.
